How can we think about the relationship between the physical pain and psychological pleasure? The Board Submission is a furniture piece explores the possibilities that the painful physical experience can invoke the psychological pleasure through the interaction between dominant and submissive.
The design concept of the BDSM furniture was evolved from the provocative expression on liberation in the BDSM culture and combined with my creative expression. The culture is often seen as taboo by the majority of people, some may even concern this as perversion. Life supposes to be interesting and playful. The design challenges the audience to ask questions. The board was made from a whimsical collage of materials, warm wood, and cold metal. An object has a dramatic aesthetics, uniquely crafted to make a design statement.
The Departure Point
The departure point is my culture background. The Chinese culture has influenced my design thinking. In the contemporary China, the washboard, has given another meaning, a tool resembles the punishment or redemption. With combination of designing for human desire. The Board Submission is also meant to change the bad customs into a supplementary for BDSM activities/culture as a statement furniture piece.
Self Exploration
As a human being, I am willing to explore the so-called “darkness” inside the self. The whole design exploration process is more of a creeping realization, with the struggle of this bold and outspoken self-exposure, which is creating an artful furniture piece concerned with the human desire and experience that could be potentially used for the BDSM community.
